Syrah, Grenache Rouge
Côtes du Vivarais is the main wine producing area of that most beautiful part of the Rhone Valley, the Ardèche. It is a bit of an insiders secret as only the most savvy will know that the Ardèche is the source of some seriously delicious, great value wines. If you divert inland off the drive south and then survive the stunning valleys and mountain gorges, you will find Gregory Dupre at the family vineyard Domaine de Vigier.
L`Intemporel (or in English “the timeless one”) is the flagship wine of the Domaine with total production less than 7,000 bottles.  An average blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache from old organic vines, this wine really does punch above its weight. Hand harvested grapes with a long 3-week maceration using traditional pigeage (Gregory maintains that this brings extra fruitiness and roundness to the wine). The wine then matures for 18 months in oak barrels and a further 6 months before release. This is a stunning Rhone red wine that sings of its heritage at a price that you can hardly believe. A beautiful garnet colour with a nose of smashed black fruits, tingly pepper, and warm spices. On the mouth we discover sweet wild blackberries and tangy blackcurrants with harmonious smooth tannins supported by well-integrated oak – a real bombshell of a wine.
Eat with anything big plus surprisingly drinkable on its own. Is this Chateauneuf -du-Pape in disguise ?
