Malbec
This is the type of wine that we delight in finding. Something very different — very rare and very unusual. Yes, it is 100% Malbec (a rarity in Bordeaux) and then aged in clay amphora for 18 months. Yes, it is only made in the best vintages and with total production less than 3,000 bottles it is something that you probably have never tasted before.
Patrick`s Malbec is grown on a special 1-hectare plot and in a hot year ripens enough to make this special cuvee. The grapes are cold macerated for 5 days to extract the maximum of aromas and then a final hot maceration of up to 30 days to aid good concentration. The wine is then aged for 18 months in amphora and then finally bottled at the property.
Why use amphora? Well, it has been used for ageing and serving wine for thousands of years and is a sort of halfway house between a stainless-steel tank and an oak barrel. Patrick believes the resulting amphora wine is “fresher and more mineral” than aging in oak. The bouquet is intense, rich, and profound – very seductive. On the palate words like plums, dark chocolate, morello cherries, liquorice, smoky spices, and expresso coffee jump into mind. A luscious smorgasbord of different flavours within a structure of soft tannins – this wine is something different.
Drink now after some aeration, or keep and enjoy over the next 5 years or so. Works on its own by the fireside or with any food big enough to take it on.
As we said at the start “Something very different – very rare and very unusual”.
