Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon

Montagne Saint Emilion is the largest of the Saint Emilion satellites and has no doubt benefited from recent global warming. As little as 10 years ago the wines from Montagne Saint Emilion would be regarded as somewhat austere and rather dull. Now they are in the “must watch” box within the wine trade, due their ability to produce long-lived wines that are easy on the wallet but without stinting on quality and flavours.
Ch Piron dates back to the 13th century and is now run by two cousins who are real characters– Cedric and Sebastien Fressineau. They believe in respecting tradition and refuse to follow the latest fashions in winemaking. On a recent visit they proudly showed us a Chateau Piron 1998. Over 25 years old and drinking just like a fine old Claret should.
Ch. Piron Montagne St. Emilion is a wine of difference and personality. From the well acclaimed 2019 vintage and with a blend of 85% Merlot,10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is very drinkable now but has many more years of pleasure ahead. On the palate the wine presents concentrated fruits that are nicely balanced with smooth tannins. A long finish and a rare style of wine, combining both power and refinement. Succulent, drinkable St. Emilion style merlot made by a family and not by a factory! Drink now—2034
