Petit Chablis is one of those names that the French wish they had never thought of and would love to change. There is nothing “little” about Petit Chablis compared to Chablis itself – it is just different and in fact Petit Chablis is the preferred choice of many in the local bars and bistros.
Petit Chablis is overall fresher, lighter and less complex giving a perfect match for lighter foods and easy drinking. A matter of style rather than quality.
The reason for the differences between types of Chablis is of course terroir. The Petit Chablis vines grow on the plateau at the top of the slopes where the chalk soil is of the Portland type (less fossils) rather than Kimmeridgian chalk as per the rest of Chablis. This wine has a shining light golden colour with white flowers and citrus on the nose. It has the lean and steely flavour profile of classic Chablis but an altogether fruitier and more accessible style.
